MPG Ranch Pollinators and Food Security Research Project

There is a global decline in the population of bees and other pollinators. What does this mean for our world? What does this mean for our local ecosystems that depend on local pollinators to produce local plant life that in turn feeds local animals and insects? The research being done at MPG Ranch is a great example of learning more about the fragile pollinator ecosystem.

Students design a sustainable, ecosystem-friendly solution using pollinators to address food insecurity for their community. Discover how pollinators impact food security and the ecosystem and the research on these critically diverse pollinators that takes place at MPG Ranch. Begin your journey using empathy and a user-centered design approach to create a prototype plan to combat food insecurity for the community.

MPG Ranch Golden Eagle High School Challenge: Connecting science and problem-solving with
live visits with researchers

After analyzing the data from MPG Ranch  and Raptor View Research Institute and researching, students create a visual graphical abstract similar to those in scientific papers to interpret the data and support their recommendations for Eagle stewardship in their area.

The graphical abstract is persuasive in nature, clearly use the ABT framework to summarize key points and be backed by factual evidence. It should appropriate to present to policymakers in your area, region, nationally, and internationally. Check out this sample video here!

Chemistry in the WILD!

Learn soil science alongside Environmental Scientist Michael McTee of MPG Ranch in this inquiry-based soil science project. This free project is fully supported with teacher lesson plans, student resources, video instructions, and a step-by-step process for investigating local soil pH and comparing it to the study Michael McTee conducted on the MPG Ranch soil where damage was done by skeet targets. This soil science project demonstrates why chemistry is so important and helps answer the student question, "When am I ever going to use this?"

High School MPG Ranch Mountain Lion Challenge: Trophic Cascade and Biodiversity with live visits with researchers.

High School Mountain Lion Challenge

After analyzing the data from MPG Ranch students will, examine restoration maps, explore mountain lion information from studies to build an understanding of wildlife management issues on a diverse landscape. They will select investigative action planning steps and create a Phase I management plan using the ABT framework for scientific communication.

Involve your students in this on-going study. Check out more information here!
